Bending rules and flamboyance

Ha! Didn't think there would be words of wisdom relevant to my teaching of music analysis coming from My Paper Executive Look 2010, but I was wrong! Chanced upon two surprise finds:

i. "Before you can even attempt to bend the rules, you've got to learn them so well that you don't even have to think about it, it'll be reactive." ('best advice" shared by Senior Training Consultant, Louie Tai, 18 Mar 2010)

I'm sure all those past masters who pushed musical boundaries in their music compositions must have already similarly internalized the rules, even if subconsciously/intuitively, when they broke new grounds with their rule-bending or even rule-breaking.

ii. "Marry the flamboyance of a marketeer with the technical rationality of a professional -- Be technically sound, and be able to sell that knowledge." ("best advice" shared by tax consultant, Scott Chen, 16 Mar 2010)

I would aspire to that! Technical competence is important to any teacher, but equally the ability to 'sell' your wares to the students.
