Check this out!

If you have been wondering whether it is 'right' (i.e. appropriate) to analyze pop music the way we've been doing, you may like to take a look at a recent PhD dissertation by Christopher Doll, "Listening to Rock Harmony" (Columbia University, 2007), available at http://www.columbia.edu/~ccd2005/research.html. Here is a rock music composer analyzing rock music the classical way! Do note, however, that his analytical system and symbols are not entirely the same as what we've been using in our class.

Hi Dr. Chong,
Just wanted to let you know that the site which your entry links to, about analyzing rock music in the classical manner, is no longer on the server. :-)

Thanks, Ainsley; MeiHui has also just informed me. Looks like the dissertation is no longer available for free access. However, if anyone is still interested, it is available at http://digitalcommons.libraries.columbia.edu/dissertations/AAI3266569/ or through ProQuest Dissertation (which you can access via NIE's e-databases).
